4 Basic Survival How-Tos to Stay Prepared

We get everything at our fingertips from delivery to dates. However, if the Internet is knocked out and the government is in a serious crisis, know some skills to help you stay alive.

Even if you are a beginner prepper, there are four basic survival skills you need to get started. In whichever order you prioritize these basic skills, you need to stay ahead of most people who will likely be in the same situation as you. Any crisis can start tomorrow and will dictate the most important skill for survival.

1. Water

Humans can go without water for 3 days before they die, but you’re going to be severely dehydrated even before those 3 days are finished.

If you cannot find a ready water source, then there are other ways to find water. Look for locations like dried-up streams and areas with lots of lush vegetation to dig up. Take off your shirt if it’s in the wild and press it to the ground to catch the dew. If you’re on a mountain, stay parallel to find streams going downhill. Use your knowledge and skill to purify water for drinking.

2. Shelter

To protect yourself from the elements and wild animals, you’ll need shelter. It is fairly easy to create a survival shelter in the woods. Remember to build a shelter for yourself before it gets dark!

3. Warmth

Temperatures can drop fast whether you are in the woods or in the desert, so you must prioritize getting warm. Dirt is a perfect insulator for an emergency blanket when you don’t have one, and a well-built survival shelter will help you keep safe. Starting a fire is another way to keep warm.

4. Food

As long as you know where and how to look for it, there is plenty of food in the wild such as wild animals, plants, and insects. Most insects are edible and very nutritious too. Never eat a plant until you are 100% positive that it is edible. Otherwise, you’ll end up getting sick.

With these four simple survival how-tos, your survival education doesn’t end here. You can learn much more, such as how to start a fire without matches or how to forage. A true survivor remains curious and discovers new knowledge, learning from new viewpoints on topics he or she already knows.
