6 Defense Mechanisms to Secure Your Home

Successful home defense does not require a complete castle moat or a mangled barbed-wire fence. Creating a secure home can be achieved by incorporating a lot of basic home defense mechanisms. The more concealed your home is, the more likely the thief will find an easier target. The ultimate objective is to not make your home an easy target. Here are some ideas to secure your home.

Alarm System

Google search will show a wide range of home security and surveillance solutions. Some systems make it possible for you to “arm” your house. If you have the money, there are quite a few systems you may want to investigate for your home. Do your homework before you get a long-term security system.

Dogs

A dog — and the larger the better — is one of the best protective measures for several thousand years. These four-legged warning systems are lovable, are naturally defensive, and possess senses much greater than ours. Their ears are going to pick up any intruder well before any warning system goes off. Even the threat of a dog holds back any bad guys.

Deadbolts

You cannot open a door with a deadbolt even when you try slide a shim or credit card. This one requires much experience or talent in picking locks. They can be picked like most locks, but unqualified invaders slow down. Even if a trained burglar wants to pick the deadbolt lock, there will be some noise warning your dog.

Window Barring

You can cut a wooden strip that matches well with the window from your lower window sash and window trim. You can paint this stick to match the window and jam in the window corner. This window barring is less noticeable. This eliminates the chances of anyone using a crossbar on the bottom sash and the window lock being broken. Cut a longer strip and place it in the lower part of the glass sliding doors to connect to the locks.

Shrubbery

Shrubberies are not great for decoration but also for better home defense. Choose shrubs covered by long, sharp thorns and plant them under your home’s ground-floor windows and other points of weakness. Excellent options are rose bushes, hawthorn, blackthorn, fire bush, fuchsia, barberry, and holly.

Noise Makers

Chimes, alarms, and other loud objects can be simple home defense mechanisms. They can be connected to outside and inside doors to let you know when the door is being opened or closed. It could be distracting during the day when you and your family are running around the house, but they can help you feel more secure in the middle of the night.
